University of Connecticut Car Accidents

For students and families at the University of Connecticut, this is an exciting time of year! Dorms are opening for new residents, the UCONN Coop is bustling with customers, and the local shops and restaurants are booming!

This increase in activity also brings and increase in traffic. Route 195 which is a state highway, is the main thoroughfare to access the University of Connecticut. Don't be fooled by the term highway! Route 195 is single lane traffic on both sides. With over 32,000 students enrolled in UCONN Storrs campus, combined with drivers from EO Smith High School, as well as local residents, this stretch of road is congested! Drivers need to be extra cautious due to heavy car and pedestrian traffic.

When driving through this area of Connecticut drivers must remember two things; Keep an eye out for pedestrians, and don't follow the car in front too close. Students from EO Smith High School, and UCONN walk and jog along Route 195. Students also cross Route 195 from the school campuses to get to the shopping area, dorms and classrooms. The pedestrian traffic is monitored with crosswalk signals but drivers still need to be extra cautious due to the large number of pedestrians. There are also numerous traffic lights in this area. The constant stop and go traffic is a recipe for a rear end collision if drivers are following too close.
There are many accidents in this area during the school year ranging from minor to catastrophic. Just this weekend there was a crash.
