Underride crashes attracting attention in Boston

As anyone in Hartford knows, tractor trailers are about five times the size of a passenger vehicle and can weigh anywhere from 20-30 times more, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. As such, it is no surprise that these big rigs have the capacity to cause a lot of damage when they collide with other objects. They also require a lot of room to maneuver in and with trailers that have a wide distance from the road, it is not uncommon for cars to get caught underneath them.

Drivers or Motorcyclists: Who is to blame?

While a number of drivers in Connecticut and across the U.S. may keep on the lookout for you and other motorcyclists, there are many who do not. Although motorcyclists can be a fault for causing a serious accident, motorists are more likely to be at fault. In a study conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation, researchers found that the majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by negligent truckers and motorists. In some instances, these drivers may be distracted, intoxicated or fatigued while sharing the road with motorcyclists. Whatever the reason may be, motorists and truckers may make dangerous choices that could endanger your life, as well as the lives of other motorcyclists who are sharing the road with them.

Auto accidents common precursor to brain injuries

When people are involved in an automobile accident, they may suffer from a number of serious injuries, such as spinal cord damage, broken bones and lacerations. One of the most common car accident injuries, however, is traumatic brain damage. Motor vehicle accidents are the third leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in Connecticut and across the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control. Traumatic brain injuries range from mild to severe, and can lead to long-term cognitive damage. In some cases, brain injury victims are not able to return to work, participate in their favorite activities or even perform simple everyday tasks due to their disabilities.

Want to stop distracted driving? There's an app for that.

Distracted driving remains a problem throughout the country. It seems counterintuitive that yet more technology may be the answer, but that's exactly the crux of a recent piece by National Public Radio (NPR). The piece discusses a new feature that was recently proposed by Apple, a leading innovator in all things technology. The proposal involves a function on its iphones that would block specific phone capabilities when the phone is in a vehicle. The function works in three ways:

Types of premises liability cases

When a person falls victim to unsafe or hazardous conditions at a retail store, mall or neighbors’ property in Connecticut, he or she may be able to file a premises liability case against the property owner. According to the Connecticut General Assembly, people have a responsibility to ensure that their property is safe and does not pose a threat to others. Property owners who know that they have broken equipment, maintenance issues or other unsafe conditions on the premises and fail to fix those problems, may be held accountable for any injuries that occur as a result of their negligence
