The Importance of Documenting the Scene of a Car Accident

A car accident is a very traumatic and painful event. Whether you are involved in a single-vehicle accident or a multi-vehicle accident, the injuries caused by a collision are often serious or life-threatening. If you or your passengers have sustained injuries from a car accident, getting medical attention is the first priority. Once emergency medical care has assessed your condition, it is important for the parties to exchange contact information and provide a statement to the police. Never admit any fault, simply provide facts the officer can use to file his or her report. The police report from the scene of an accident is an essential piece of evidence that will be used to help in determining liability for the accident and to substantiate your insurance claims.

It is also important for you to take pictures and provide your own documentation of the accident, when possible. As soon as possible after the accident, and ideally prior to any vehicles or people leaving the scene, you need to take photos. Photos should be taken of the vehicles, close-ups of any damage caused, the position of the vehicles in relation to each other and other objects on/near the road, the other driver and any passengers from either of the vehicles, street signs, traffic lights or road obstacles that may have contributed to the accident, and any other information that could be helpful. By taking these photos you may be supplying vital documentation, and protecting yourself should the other party attempt to make a false claim or accusation.

If the other party is taking photos, you still need to take your own. You should also write down everything you can remember about the moments leading up to the accident. Include how you felt after the accident, what you observed and any other information including what you believe caused the accident. It is critical that you get in touch with a Connecticut personal injury lawyer as early as possible after the accident, and provide your photos and written accounts and other documentation you have gathered. In cases of very serious injury, none of this is possible. A highly skilled car accident lawyer can dispatch an independent accident investigator to assist in the process in these cases.
