The Safest Time to Drive Your Car

As New Englanders when winter hits, we think safety first! Last winter being one of the snowiest on record, numerous drivers chose to work from home rather than drive through the many feet of snow and ice we were bombarded with. Winter is often thought to be the most dangerous time to drive a car, however, statistics show, driving on a snowy Monday afternoon in January is not even close to the most dangerous time to drive.

The most dangerous month, it turns out, is August, and Saturday the most dangerous day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Looking at our own behavior we may be able to determine why this is the case. These are the times we do more driving, and more relaxed driving. Our Connecticut car accident attorneys tell us that accidents happens when the roads are busier and people make carelss mistakes. Judging by what we see during the Monday morning commute, very alert attentive drivers vs. a Saturday afternoon mid August driver traveling to any of the Connecticut beaches the numbers make sense. More traffic, higher number of distracted drivers.

The simple fact is, getting behind the wheel of a car is the riskiest thing most people do every day, says Russ Rader, a spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

But since fatal crashes happen in "ones and twos" scattered across the country, the general public doesn't realize their collective toll--about 110 people per day, nationwide.

"If a hundred-seat airplane were crashing every day in the U.S. , the air transportation system would be shut down with demands for the government to do something," Rader says. "But that doesn't happen with auto crashes."

When determining the most dangerous times to drive, findings show Time of day also plays an important role. Driving at night has shown to be more hazardous then the morning commute. The reason for this is due to the fact that the instances of drunk driving, speeding and driving without a safety belt all significantly increase during the night hours and each contributes directly to increased car accidents and fatality rates.

Mid-week days like Tuesday and Wednesday are days of light traffic and statisitics show fewer car accidents on these days.
